ENGIE planning UKs battery storage unit in former power plant site
French energy group ENGIE has submitted a planning application to build a battery storage facility in its former 1,000- megawatt (MW) Rugeley Power Station site, in England’s West Midlands, Kallanish Energy learns.UK’s energy minister, Andrea Leadsom, said Sunday the company was planning to build a “giant battery storage farm” where it once operated two coal-fired power plants, the Rugeley A and Rugeley B stations, in a move that would promote innovation and the use of smart energy.A spokesperson for ENGIE in the UK told Kallanish Energy that, if approved, the unit wouldn’t be a giant project, but would be relevant for the redevelopment of the Rugeley site, decommissioned on June 8.The application, submitted to the Cannock Chase District Council roughly two weeks ago, proposes construction of a 45MW facility aimed at entering the national grid tender.
